Free - Nik Collection

It was once a $500 package of pro photo editing software but is now completely free. The Nik Collection of photo editing tools, which was recently priced at $150 following Google’s acquisition in 2012, is now available free for everyone.

“As we continue to focus our long-term investments in building incredible photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, we’ve decided to make the Nik Collection desktop suite available for free,” Google announced this month. Those who have already paid for the software in 2016 will get their money back automatically.

UPDATE - 2018

The product has now been acquired from Google by DxO labs. They plan to update the Collection and enhance the U Point technology. At present the Collection can still be downloaded freely by emailing DxO for a download link.

  1. I have downloaded the Nik Collection and I am trying to get it to work with PSE 2018. I have pointed PSE to the right folder and it displays all the available plugins but I can only get HDR to work properly. The others load in but do not cause PSE to create a layer so the work can not be saved. On start up, the editor informs me that some plugins are not available. Is there a way to make them available please?

  2. If you have chosen Photoshop Elements 16 – 64 bit in the installation wizard you should be able to open a photo in expert mode and use the menu e.g.
Filter >> Nik Collection >> Color FX Pro 4

Add your filter(s) from the left hand panel and when you finish simply click the word Brush. The Selective tool should pop-up automatically and you can click Apply. Either click OK and save or click brush to apply a mask. Then select the black thumbnail mask in the layers panel (not the image thumbnail) choose the brush tool, set the color chip so that white is on top and start brushing over the image to reveal the effects in the parts of the image preferred.

  3. Hi 99jon and thanks for your reply. However, I have tried what you have suggested and it just does not work. I do not get the selective tool appearing whatever I do and when I press brush it simply reverts back to the editor and I can make no changes to the image. On startup, the editor tells me that some plugins are not available which, on investigation, is all of them. I think maybe PSE 2018 is not compatible? Any other ideas?

  4. You can also launch the tool from the PSE Editor menu after opening an image. So give that a try and keep it open with the layers pallet.

File >> Automation Tools >> Nik Collection Selective Tool

  5. Otherwise run the installation again by double-clicking on the DXO NiK app which should be in your downloads. The installation Wizard should launch again.
