Adobe Releases Photoshop 2020

Version 21.0 was released together with the first iteration of Photoshop for iPad OS.

In the desktop version I do like the improvements to Content aware Fill and the ability to use auto or custom sampling. Transform Warp with the ability to add multiple random grid points looks really cool. I also like the new panels for Gradients, Patterns and Shapes.

With Adobe’s deep knowledge of the PSDc format and optimized integration with Cloud Documents, customers should now be able to work seamlessly on desktop, laptop and iPad.

With the document cloud linkage and automatic saving of cloud documents, when closed, PS 2020 gets the new eco-system logo (with rounded corners) in common with other apps that have this workflow integration.

Select Subject now has improved speed of selection and the properties panel for pixel layers now includes quick action buttons for Select Subject and Remove Background requiring only a single click. Object Selection lets you define parts of an image when using Select Subject, simply by drawing a box.

Summary

Adobe Launches Lightroom 3 & Lightroom Classic 9

Adobe has just released new versions of Lightroom following keynote speeches at the Adobe Max 2019 conference in Los Angeles.
The headline features are listed below with more information at the links.

Lightroom Classic 9.0
Version 9.0 continues the Lightroom Classic story. Here are some nice improvements and new features. It’s continued evolution rather than revolution but no fanfares are required as happened in the past with perpetual licences. Adobe provides regular updates every quarter or more often. The development team might have continued to 8.14, 8.15, 8.16 etc. but a dividing line is good as this version requires a catalog conversion update (your previous copy is preserved) and any editing of old photos with process version 3 or 4 will automatically update to the current process version – P/V5. If any collections are being syncd to the cloud, the sync.lrdata file will be copied and compressed next to the catalog meaning this upgrade could take a little longer.

One of my favorite features in LR9 is Multi-Batch Export. When exporting to the hard drive this means several export presets can be selected to output multiple batches in a single export session.

Tip – use a separate sub-folder for each batch to avoid errors or overwriting one set with another. Some of my older export presets contained the instruction to choose a folder later. I’ve now replaced these with a specific destination sub-folder for a more efficient workflow.

-Nikon Tether SDK is updated to the latest version. This should fix an existing Tether connection issue in the Nikon D700 camera. New firmware support is provided for D850, Z6, and Z7.

Other Features & Enhancements
-Fill edges for pano merge. Unlike Boundary Warp (still available) this new feature uses Content-Aware Fill technology to fill the uneven edges of panoramas.

-Ability to filter folders and collections by color label.

-Addition of filtering and smart collection options for images that have depth map information.

- New option to clear history above a selected history step is now available in the context menu.

-Ability to export individual develop presets or preset groups as a zip folder containing XMP files.

-Ability to remove multiple images selected in the filmstrip when working in Loupe view using Shift+Delete. This is possible in the Library and Develop modules.

Lightroom 3.0
The version which uses the cloud eco system is known simply as Lightroom. In v3.0 Adobe has added these new features.

-A new export dialog with several presets and the ability for users to decide their own custom settings.  These include size, quality, color space, re-naming and sharpening.

The new export options are previewed in my YouTube video - click here to watch.

-Ability to create photo books and wall art via connections. At present these include Blurb and WHCC but Adobe plans more vendors and products in the future. See my video demo.

-In-app learning, presently available only on mobile devices, comes to the desktop and web apps.  This includes more inspirational and interactive content from more authors. See my YouTube video.

-Ability to migrate a Photoshop Elements Catalog from PSE 2019 & PSE 2020. This will automatically transfer photos, metadata and albums.

-Drag & drop import
See my YouTube quick tip.
