Lightroom Release - May 2019

Adobe has announced today the release of updates for all of the Lightroom products with several new features and support for new camera models.

One of my favourite new features is the Texture slider.
I’ve been using this new slider a lot, especially as a local selective adjustment and I find the results very pleasing. I would say it sits between clarity and sharpening so it’s always best to apply adjustments when viewing images 1:1
I’m finding I get much better results with Texture, even with high positive or negative settings compared with clarity which often adds mid-tone contrast and some sharpening to give an artificial grungy look or hazy softening.
I’ve created a user preset using an off-image graduated filter to apply a combination of Texture with a little Dehaze and this is proving useful on many of my landscape photos with the ability to apply the effect with a single click,

The Texture global adjustment slider is in the Basic tab, under Presence and just above the Clarity slider in Classic or in the Effects tab in Lightroom.

The Texture local adjustment slider is in the local adjustment controls, above Clarity after selecting brush, radial or graduated (linear) filters.
The algorithm uses process version 5. images using PV3 or PV4 will get updated to PV5. Texture works by isolating only medium-sized details without increasing noise.

-Positive values enhance image texture - good for landscapes, and foreground features etc.
-Negative values decrease image texture - good for skin smoothing. A new preset called Soften Skin Lite has been introduced which uses a combination of negative clarity and texture when using the brush.

The new Texture tool is available in all versions of Lightroom, on mobile and in Adobe Camera Raw.

Update
From the Creative Cloud desktop installer, go to the apps tab and click update next to the app you wish to install. iOS updates can be downloaded from the App Store and Android updates from Google Play. The letters CC have been dropped from product titles; so we now see Lightroom Classic. The cloud eco system is now simply known as Lightroom, including Lightroom Mobile and Lightroom Web. Apple iPad users should download Adobe Lightroom for iPad.

Re-cycle bin for Lightroom Cloud

This is a much requested feature and Adobe customers will be pleased to see this new trash can introduced in the May 2019 release of Lightroom.

Photos permanently deleted will be sent to the trash where they will remain for up to 60 days. Deleted photos do not count towards your cloud storage limit; so space is freed-up immediately. Items in the re-cycle bin can be restored to your library by clicking the undo icon on the blue menu bar that appears after making a selection.

At present, the items sent to trash can only be viewed by logging-in to the web app but it should be possible to delete photos from the desktop or mobile apps to send them to the cloud trash can.

Aperture End of Life

Apple has reminded customers that Aperture won't run in versions of the Mac operating system after Mac OS Mojave. It suggests migrating to the Apple Photos app or Lightroom Classic. Most likely serious photographers will choose the latter if they have not already done so.

Lightroom dot Release - April 2019

Adobe has announced an interim dot release for Lightroom Classic, the Lightroom Ecosystem clients for desktop and mobile, and Camera Raw. The release versions are as follows:

Lightroom Classic 8.2.1
Lightroom Desktop 2.2.1
Lightroom Mobile 4.2.1 (iOS,iPad & Android)
Camera Raw 11.2.1

With the exception of Camera Raw the update will include new camera support only. The following cameras are now supported:

Canon EOS RP
Panasonic LUMIX DC-FZ1000M2 (DC-FZ10002)
Panasonic LUMIX DC-S1
Panasonic LUMIX DC-S1R
Panasonic LUMIX DC-ZS80 (DC-TZ95, DC-TZ96, DC-TZ97)
Sony A6400 (ILCE-6400)

Note: Camera Raw 11.2.1 will include a single bug fix addressing the issue of sending files from Bridge or Lightroom Classic to Photoshop where the raw files residing on a NAS would fail. Installing the Lightroom Classic update will not fix the bug. It is necessary to install the Camera Raw update to correct this issue.
