Lightroom CC Update Version 1.1 & Lightroom Classic v7.1

Adobe has released updates to the new Lr CC application together with concurrent updates to Lightroom Classic and the mobile apps. These versions include new camera support (ACR 10.1) for many recent camera models including the Sony A7R mk III. Tethering for the Nikon D850 has been added to Classic with updates to the latest Nikon SDK for all Nikon models on Windows. The improved Auto tool is powered by A.I.

Split Toning

Click the split toning icon in the Effects tab. The icon displays blue when the tool is active. Click again when finished editing.

The slider enables the effect to be distributed towards the highlights or the shadows or positioned centrally for an even distribution.

Two small circle icons at the bottom left and right of the color picker pallet can be dragged to select the required hue for the split tones. The intensity of saturation can be adjusted by dragging up or down.

Drag down to reduce saturation - click image to enlarge

Curves

Lightroom CC now gets curves adjustments. This is activated by clicking the small curves icon found in the Light panel adjacent to the Auto button.

By clicking the white button in the curves dialog, points can be added, which can be dragged to form an regular s-shaped curve or more dramatic adjustments, if preferred. Individual color channels can also be adjusted by clicking the red, green or blue buttons. A context menu (right-click) shows additional options including the ability to display all curves.

Local Storage Control

Available storage and required space on the internal drive is now shown more clearly in Preferences >> Local Storage

Ligtroom CC will fully respect the user setting (25% by default) and manage proxies more intelligently. In the first release, all smart previews were added to the cache. This is now a user option which can be enabled where a customer wishes to have a smart preview available for off-line editing for every file.

Full Screen

When viewing a single image in the Detail window press the F key for full screen. Press F again to exit. Whilst in Full Screen mode it is possible to use the left and right arrow keys to view other images from the same album or source. This can also be accessed from the menu:

View >> Detail - Full Screen

Auto

The new Auto feature adjusts photos using all tones and colors, now including vibrance and saturation – see Lightroom Classic below.

New tethering support added for Nikon D850.

SDK for Nikon D5 has been updated. Also, SDK has been updated on Windows for all Nikon cameras.

New support has been added for recent camera models together with new lens profiles.

Auto

Adobe's new Auto feature in Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC and Camera Raw uses advanced machine learning to automatically apply the best edits for the following slider controls: Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Saturation and Vibrance – with a single click. Adobe says “The underlying neural nets were trained with thousands of professionally shot and manually edited photos to evaluate and correct an image just like a skilled human photographer.”

If you subsequently apply a crop, white balance adjustment, or camera profile changes, Lightroom will re-enable the Auto button. Pressing Auto again will re-compute the settings based on the updated rendering.

I have found this new feature gives far more pleasing results compared with the previous auto-tone. I may consider using it as a starting point or import preset.

I was intrigued by the term “underlying neural nets” so I did some Googling. Amazingly it’s not just about A.I. in driverless cars that perform with the control of the best human drivers, but also about medical science and of course image recognition.

Quote:
Deep learning has truly come into the mainstream in the past few years. Deep learning uses neural nets with a lot of hidden layers (dozens in today’s state of the art), and requires large amounts of training data. These models have been particularly effective in gaining insight and approaching human level accuracy in perceptual tasks like vision, speech, and language processing. The theory and mathematical foundations were laid several decades ago. Primarily two phenomena have contributed to the rise of machine learning (a) Availability of huge data-sets/training examples in multiple domains and (b) Advances in raw compute power and the rise of efficient parallel hardware.

Adobe Sensei continues to advance and there are more exciting developments in the pipeline like Scene Stitch - Sneak Peek.

Removal of individual Samples within Color Range Masking

Adobe has added the ability to remove individual color samples within a Color Range Mask. Simply use Option or Alt + Click on existing samples that you want to remove.
